House Passes Mine Permitting Reform Legislation

Jul 12, 2012Press Release

WASHINGTON – Rep. Sean Duffy (WI-07) released the following statement today after the House passed H.R. 4402, the National Strategic and Critical Minerals Production Act:

“We took a critical step today toward creating new jobs in this country and growing our economy by passing legislation that safely expedites the mine permitting process.  America has the unfortunate reputation for having one of the most lengthy, complex, and unpredictable permitting review processes in the world.  Removing bureaucratic red tape encourages more American and Wisconsin mining projects to flourish and produce truly American made goods.  We’ll be putting money back into our economy, stimulating job growth and providing more opportunity to hard working Americans.  And here in the Wisconsin 7th Congressional District, we know full well how bureaucratic red tape can stifle mine projects.  Earlier this year, a company proposed breaking ground on a new iron-ore mine that would have created upward of 700 jobs and, would have brought in nearly $1.5 billion in state and federal tax revenue.  Sadly, bureaucratic road blocks and partisan politics killed project.  Given the anemic jobs numbers reported month after month, I urge the Senate to quickly take up H.R. 4402.”
